Many have tried to flatter our city by comparing it to an already existing one. But those who spend their days and nights here know: there's nothing quite like Colorado Springs. It has its beauty as well as its warts. But these are the things that make up our city. It is part of who we are.

Native American tribes, specifically the Ute tribe, inhabit the Pike's Peak region. |

1640 |
|
The Ute tribe makes contact with Spanish explorers. |
|

1803 |
|
The United States purchase the Louisiana territory (which includes Colorado) from France. |

| |
1806 |
|
Zebulon Pike, a twenty-six year-old military officer, comes across the mountain that bears his name. His party does not complete the accent. |

1859 |
|
The Pikes Peak or Bust Gold Rush begins. As a result, Colorado City is founded as a supply center. |

1869 |
|
General William Jackson Palmer and associates settle in the Pikes Peak region, forming the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Company. |

1871 |
|
General Palmer and associates formally found the city of Colorado Springs. |

Plans are drawn for the town of Manitou. |

Colorado College is founded. |

Colorado is admitted into the Union, becoming the 38th state. |

General Palmer sells his interests in the railroad and embarks a campaign to beautify the city. |

General Palmer builds the castle at Glen Eyrie. |

Colorado City is incorporated into Colorado Springs. |

Spencer Penrose opens the Broadmoor Hotel. |

The U.S. Air Force established the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. |

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is moved to Colorado Springs. |

The United States Olympic Committee moves their headquarters to Colorado Springs. |

1988 |
|
Colorado Springs Economic Development Council launches campaign to attract Christian non-profit ministries. Within three years, fifty non-profits with 2,500 employees have moved to the city. |

The Pikes Peak region is impacted deeply by the events of September 11th. The large military community is mobilized to war efforts in Afghanistan and later Iraq. The area is rocked by the loss of many local soldiers.
